Journaling with Hemi-Sync

By Pam Boyer

Hemi-Sync® is an inexpensive and well-vetted sound technology that helps the brain balance itself. When synchronization occurs, we enter a relaxed and more creative brain state.

This is my story and I'm sticking to it ...

Since early 2000, I have been enhancing my journaling sessions with a product called Hemi-Sync®. Hemi-Sync is a sound technology that creates an environment that encourages the brain to synchronize the left and right hemispheres. When synchronization occurs, we enter a relaxed and more creative brain state. Different brain states can be targeted by choosing different musical selections.

I have created a routine that I follow every day.

You may want to try a few titles to find one that works for you. Here is a link to more selections in the Concentration category.

Putting on my headphones or earbuds and selecting a title to listen to is my cue to relax and start writing. I write my Morning Pages by hand in an inexpensive, lined notebook so I don’t have to deal with any kind of laptop or tablet at that point. If I end up with something I want to expand on, I create a Word document on my laptop later in the day.

When I do my Morning Pages I most often use a selection called “Baroque Gardens.” This title works for me because I studied classical piano for nine years and find the Baroque period pieces very peaceful.

I have also use “Guitarra Classica” and “Remembrance” on a regular basis. I find musical selections to be the most conducive to journaling, but I choose the ones that include focused frequencies so that I can be alert.

"Most journaling programs recommend writing at the same time and in the same place on a daily basis."

By listening to the Hemi-Sync selection, I create an environment that blocks out noise, distractions and focuses my attention on journaling. I chose a location where there is not much movement or activity since I’m easily distracted. Usually I’m up before anybody else in the morning, which helps me not be disturbed. I sit upright in my favorite chair so I don’t fall asleep and I let the sound frequencies lead my brain into a relaxed, but focused state. Now that I am in the habit of using this combination I find the writing flows as soon as I put my headphones on.

This is a practice that you, too, can do. Below is your “get-ready” list.

1. Pick a device to play your Hemi-Sync selection. This can be a CD player, if you prefer CD’s and simplicity. You can use your smart phone, an iPod, iPad or your computer. If you decide to use one of these devices, you’ll need to load the CD and/or the download onto iTunes (or similar). Here are instructions on how to use iTunes.

2. Next, you’ll want to have earbuds or headphones. If you find yourself in a noisy or distracting environment, you might find noise-cancelling headsets are ideal. Our favorite are Bose headsets. They are a bit on the pricey side, but you can find used (in good condition) on Amazon.

3. Decide what Hemi-Sync music you’d like to enjoy. I mentioned a few above. Another good one is: Seasons at Robert’s Mountain.

If you want to listen to samples before purchasing, you can do that on the Hemi-Sync website. We’ll be happy to offer you more suggestions via email. You can download an MP3 file or purchase a CD.

4. After you have what you need, it’s simply a matter of establishing a practice. Slot time each day to sit with your journal and write while listening to Hemi-Sync.
